Speaking at the 5th Annual Conference of the International Islamic University Malaysia Association, Nigeria Chapter, Shekarau highlighted the impact of socio-economic conditions on citizens’ well-being, encompassing factors such as income, safety, employment, access to healthcare, education, and electricity.

Represented by economist Dr. Muhammad Sagagi, Shekarau expressed concern over Nigeria’s poor socio-economic condition despite abundant resources. He pointed out the nation’s low per-capita income as a significant hindrance to development. The former governor underscored the pressing issue of unemployment, particularly among the youth, with over 23 million unemployed and an additional 20 million underemployed individuals.

Shekarau criticized the erratic and modest economic growth rates, emphasizing their inadequacy to generate jobs and alleviate poverty. He urged policymakers to prioritize growing the economy and optimizing the potentials of key sectors to create jobs and improve socio-economic conditions.

Addressing the role of the private sector, Shekarau advocated for business environment reforms to attract private investment. He also emphasized the importance of governments at all levels addressing poverty, inequality, and joblessness through robust redistribution programs.

The Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, joined the discussion, calling on wealthy Nigerians to actively contribute to sustainable peace and development by directly engaging with those affected by humanitarian crises. He stressed the fundamental principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence in humanitarian actions and urged the enforcement of policies and social protection systems for youths and women.

The Emir also highlighted the significance of empowerment for youth, emphasizing its role in fostering equal citizenship and building confidence within communities. The President of IIUM Alumni Nigeria Chapter expressed hope for Nigeria’s speedy recovery from current economic challenges in his earlier remarks.
