In an open letter dated September 24, 2026, and addressed to President Tinubu through Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Onoh emphasized that El-Rufai’s foundational contributions to the APC and the 2023 presidential campaign must not be forgotten. Highlighting El-Rufai’s instrumental role in securing Tinubu’s historic election victory, Onoh stated: “We cannot quickly erase from our memories the immense, foundational role Mallam El-Rufai played in ensuring the victory of the All Progressives Congress and your historic election in 2023.”

While describing El-Rufai as rigid, intensely opinionated, and notoriously difficult to work with, Onoh noted that these same traits reflected his deep loyalty once committed to a cause. He expressed concern that some of the former governor’s associates had distanced themselves due to political considerations, but stressed that he was unwilling to remain silent.

Drawing from history, Onoh urged Tinubu to follow examples of political reconciliation, such as Julius Caesar’s clemency and former President Shehu Shagari’s 1982 pardon of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to demonstrate that mercy and unity can heal political divisions. He argued that presidential intervention would display profound political maturity rather than weakness, warning that leaving a key architect of the current democratic dispensation isolated risks deepening national fractures.

Concluding his appeal, Onoh urged the President to choose compassion over confinement and reconciliation over retribution, ensuring the situation fosters national healing instead of division. “Please, let us get value out of this. It matters,” he added.

Speaking with Leadership on Thursday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, stated that there was “no reason for such a call” and maintained that the legislature should not be dragged into political arguments. The controversy stems from the Presidency’s announcement that President Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30, 2026, for a three-week vacation before subsequently extending his stay abroad by a few days.

Adaramodu pointed out that Senate President Godswill Akpabio had already addressed the matter while inaugurating road projects in Akwa Ibom State. Emphasizing that the National Assembly is a lawmaking body rather than a political platform, Adaramodu questioned why lawmakers should respond to every statement made by politicians or civil society organizations as elections approach.

Addressing concerns over the President’s physical location, Adaramodu asserted that effective governance relies on capability rather than geography. “It is not geography; it is functionality,” the lawmaker stated, adding, “It is your functionality that dictates whether you are performing your duties or you are not performing your duties. It’s not your GPS.”

Dr. Kamil Shoretire, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, revealed this development in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop held for labor correspondents. According to Shoretire, preliminary talks are already taking place within the government as groundwork for a fresh wage structure. In addition, Shoretire noted that authorities are actively holding discussions with workers in specific sectors where disputes regarding salaries, allowances, and other financial packages remain unsettled.

This upcoming review follows intense pressure from organized labor unions. The current national minimum wage of ₦70,000 was enacted by the Federal Government in 2024 following extensive tripartite negotiations. However, persistent economic inflation and skyrocketing costs for basic necessities such as food and transportation have driven labor groups to continuously push for an upward review, with ongoing demands for a new minimum wage baseline of ₦500,000.
