Nigerians React As Spotify Announces 17% Workforce Reduction (See Details)

In October, Spotify reported an unusual quarterly operating profit of 32 million euros, a positive shift from a loss of 228 million in the same period the previous year. This positive performance was attributed to a 26% growth in active users during the third quarter.
In a letter to employees, Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, acknowledged the surprise factor of the sizable reduction, given the recent positive earnings report and growth. Ek explained that in 2020 and 2021, the company took advantage of lower-cost capital, making substantial investments in team expansion, content enhancement, marketing, and new verticals. However, the company now faces a different economic landscape, and despite efforts to reduce costs in the past year, the current cost structure remains too large.
Since its inception, Spotify has made significant investments to fuel growth, expanding into new markets and venturing into exclusive content like podcasts. The company’s podcast investment alone exceeds one billion dollars. In 2017, Spotify had approximately 3,000 staff members, and this number tripled to around 9,800 by the end of 2022. Despite its success in the online music market, Spotify has yet to post a full-year net profit and has achieved occasional quarterly profits.

Hanga recounted that Kwankwaso later confronted him, complaining that the event was designed to court public praise and dismissing the small portion of items allocated to him. Despite Hanga apologizing, he felt deeply disrespected—especially after previous instances where Kwankwaso pressured him to allocate empowerment resources outside his senatorial district.
Concluding that mutual respect had vanished and that Kwankwaso’s dissatisfaction ultimately cost him his return ticket, Hanga remarked, “He has treated others this way, but he had never done it to me until that moment.”

In a weekend statement emphasizing that “division is a choice” while “cooperation must now become a strategy,” Lukman argued that split resources and divided constituencies only strengthen those currently in power. He reiterated these sentiments during an appearance on Arise Television, where he advocated for a new coalition under the “G100” platform to foster a cohesive front, streamline candidate engagement, and establish a clear post-election agenda to defeat the ruling government.

“I’ve seen things work in other countries,” he said. “People should refrain from embezzling public funds. If we do the right thing, things will improve.”
