Just In: Returning Military Wrestlers Vow To Bring Further Honor To Nigeria

Upon their arrival at the International Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, around 10 pm, they were welcomed by officials from the Defence Headquarters.
Speaking to the media on arrival, AVM Abidemi Marquis, the Director of Sports at DHQ, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, for providing the platform to showcase the nation’s military on the global stage.
Marquis attributed the athletes’ stellar performance to their awareness of representing the country and the prospect of the Nigerian anthem being played if they secured medals. He emphasized that the athletes were well-motivated, with all necessary requirements for competing at the highest level being provided.
Highlighting the strategic importance of sports, Marquis mentioned that Nigeria is hosting the African Military Games next year, and their recent success is part of a building process towards achieving higher levels.
The gold medalist, Cpl. Hannah Reuben, shared that her mindset, preparation, and hard work were pivotal to her success in the women’s freestyle 68 kg category. She expressed determination to continue improving and winning more gold medals in future competitions.
Lance Cpl. Esther Ojolaide, the Silver Medalist, credited her performance to the support and encouragement received from the Chief of Defence Staff. She promised to deliver even more in the next competition hosted by Nigeria.
Coach Warrant Officer Godswill Tiebiri acknowledged the support from the CDS and highlighted the cooperation between the athletes and coaching crew. He proudly stated that the gold medal marked a historic achievement, breaking a 50-year record in the Nigerian military’s wrestling history at the world level.

Despite Hanga apologizing, he felt deeply disrespected—especially after previous instances where Kwankwaso pressured him to allocate empowerment resources outside his senatorial district.
Concluding that mutual respect had vanished and that Kwankwaso’s dissatisfaction ultimately cost him his return ticket, Hanga remarked, “He has treated others this way, but he had never done it to me until that moment.”

“I’ve seen things work in other countries,” he said. “People should refrain from embezzling public funds. If we do the right thing, things will improve.”
