Addressing the issue on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Conference in Dubai, Minister Tuggar clarified that Nigeria was not succumbing to external pressure to take action against Niger. He emphasized Nigeria’s stance, stating, “We are asking them to release President Bazoum so that he will be allowed to leave Niger. He will no longer be in custody, go to a third country mutually agreed upon, and then we start talking about the removal of sanctions.”

Tuggar rejected the notion that Nigeria was under external influence, asserting the strong historical record of Nigeria supporting just causes on the continent. He dismissed claims of external dictation, citing Nigeria’s consistent support for freedom in various African nations, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, and Mozambique. The minister emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to standing for what is right and highlighted the parallel approach being taken regarding the situation in Niger, affirming that the country’s doors remain open for diplomatic dialogue.
