The NBS emphasizes that the resulting statistics will not only be data-driven but will also be inclusive, forward-thinking, and tailored to the needs of all states in the federation.

During the Southern Stakeholders’ Engagement Workshop held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, presented a keynote address on Monday. Adeniran highlighted the novel approach to developing the new document, involving stakeholder consultations, inclusive considerations for vulnerable and physically challenged individuals, and a commitment to guiding government policy formulation, resource allocation, and progress evaluation.

Since September 2023, the NBS has been engaged in data gathering through stakeholder consultations in all the northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Adeniran underscored the importance of the new NSDS, emphasizing its role in shaping the future of Nigeria in an era where data is paramount.

He outlined five cardinal principles for crafting the new strategy, including inclusivity, quality and accuracy, innovation and technology, capacity building, and partnership and collaboration. Adeniran stressed the need to address data gaps related to marginalized groups, regions, and sectors, aligning with the global sustainable development agenda.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, commended Adeniran for efforts to modernize both the national and state statistical systems. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Emem Bob, encouraged participants to contribute diligently to the new NSDS, aiming to address gaps and challenges hindering the production of unified data reflecting current emerging realities in the country.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.
