Breaking: Liberia’s President Weah Acknowledges Defeat-Congratulates Boakai On Election Victory
Liberian President George Weah gracefully conceded defeat to his main rival, Joseph Boakai, in the country’s 2023 presidential election. The National Election Commission had earlier reported that Mr. Boakai secured 50.89 percent of the votes with almost all ballots counted, while President Weah garnered 49.11 percent.
Addressing the outcome, President Weah acknowledged the voice of the Liberian people, stating, “I stand before you tonight with a heavy heart but with the utmost respect for the democratic process that has defined our nation.” He characterized Mr. Boakai’s lead as insurmountable and, recognizing the citizens as the true victors, extended sincere congratulations to President-elect Boakai.
In his late-night address, President Weah expressed his commitment to working with Mr. Boakai for the betterment of Liberia. He acknowledged the deep divisions brought to light by the electoral process and concluded by conveying heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Boakai, his supporters, and campaign team.
Having served as Liberia’s president since 2018, President Weah is set to hand over power by January.
