Breaking: Federal Government Commences Disbursement Of N585 Million To Release 4,000 Inmates Nationwide
The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the disbursement of a N585 million relief fund for 4,000 inmates, aiming to alleviate congestion in correctional facilities across the country. Tunji-Ojo specified that inmates with fines not exceeding N1 million are eligible for the ministry’s initiative, totaling approximately 4,068 individuals. The primary goal is to address the overcrowding in correctional facilities and alleviate prolonged detention resulting from the inability to pay bail.
Expressing his satisfaction with the initiative, Tunji-Ojo stated, “It’s with great pleasure that I stand with you today to flag off the release of 4,068 inmates sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with the option of fine and compensation in custodial status nationwide. This is in a bid to decongest custodial centres as well as make ready proper reformation and rehabilitation of offenders to take place.”
As of November 17, 2023, there were reportedly 8,804 inmates across 253 custodial facilities nationwide, surpassing the total installed capacity of less than 50,000. The minister emphasized the overcrowded nature of these centers, necessitating the initiation of the relief program.
Additionally, Tunji-Ojo clarified that the funding for the program would not be solely provided by the government but through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative involving private sector entities and philanthropists nationwide.
“The total fund of N585 million was raised by corporate bodies as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for this purpose. Hence, all inmates in custodial centres who have fines or compensation not exceeding 1 million are qualified and will benefit from this gesture. In addition, we are also providing each of them a stipend to enable them to stand in their community,” he explained.
In October, the Minister of Interior had previously confirmed the government’s commitment to pay a N500 million bail fine for 4,000 inmates whose bail terms did not exceed N1 million. Tunji-Ojo assured that these fines would be settled, and the inmates released within four weeks, emphasizing the collaboration with the private sector for funding through CSR initiatives.
