In anticipation of the gubernatorial elections scheduled for Saturday across three states, the Police Service Commission has announced the readiness of its personnel to oversee the actions of police officers during the electoral process.
In a statement issued on Friday morning by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the Police Service, it was conveyed that the commission’s monitors are already on site and stationed at their assigned positions in the nine senatorial districts of Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa, where the off-cycle governorship elections are set to take place.
The statement revealed that the commission has designated specific telephone lines for Nigerians to use in reporting any instances of police misconduct or commending exemplary police behavior. The Commission monitors will be identifiable by reflective jackets bearing PSC inscriptions.
Solomon Arase, the Chairman of the Commission, has emphasized the need for the staff monitors to uphold high standards, carry out their duties diligently, and demonstrate commitment. He underscored that the commission would hold the monitors accountable for any deliberate infractions and emphasized the importance of adhering to approved guidelines on monitoring police conduct and rules of engagement.
The statement provided dedicated telephone numbers for the National Coordinating Centre and the three states (Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa) where the elections will be held. The PSC monitors are expected to observe police conduct using the Commission’s approved guidelines for policing during elections.
