The Nigerian Police Force’s Taraba State Command has officially verified the demise of Bassy Sardauna, a secondary school educator who was killed by students on Wednesday in Jalingo.
In a confirmation statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Usman, revealed that the victim was a staff member at Model Secondary School, Jalingo. Usman explained that the primary suspect, identified as a former student of the school, collaborated with accomplices on the campus to assault the teacher. The teacher, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Jalingo, where he had been transported for medical attention.
Usman assured that the command has initiated an investigation into the incident, emphasizing ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend all students implicated in the tragic killing. He urged individuals with valuable information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the police.
The motive behind the attack was discovered to be linked to the teacher’s recent decision to discipline certain students at the school. Allegedly, some students harboring resentment ambushed the teacher on his way home.
A medical professional at the medical center, confirming the incident, mentioned that the teacher passed away a few hours after being rushed to the hospital. While attempts to reach the school authorities were unsuccessful, some school staff corroborated the incident and expressed concerns about the challenging behavior of certain students, particularly those in senior classes. They appealed to the police to apprehend all the students involved in the incident.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
