Emmanuel Sanikpege has been brought before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He is facing charges for forging a document that he used as a surety for a suspect named Umor Bright.
According to the EFCC, Sanikpege was arraigned on October 31, 2023, and appeared before Justice P. I. Ajoku. He was accused of “forging a letter of attestation and falsely presenting himself as a surety to secure the release of Umor Bright, a suspect under EFCC investigation.

Sanikpege faces a two-count charge related to forgery. The charges are in violation of Section 1(2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (CAP M17 of the Revised Edition – Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007 and are punishable under Section 1 (2) of the same act.
One of the charges reads in part: “That you, Emmanuel Sanikpege, on or about the 22nd day of August, 2022, in Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did create a forged document, namely: LETTER OF ATTESTATION RE: Emanuel Sanikpege, purportedly from Government Senior Secondary School, Oyigbo, Rivers State, a document that you knew was forged, with the intention of having the document treated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as an authentic and genuine document, thereby committing an offense.”
Sanikpege pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, and the prosecution counsel, B. O. Agala, requested a trial date.
Sanikpege’s legal representative, T. Musa, requested bail for the defendant to allow time for trial preparation. Justice Ajoku granted bail in the amount of N1 million and required two sureties to post a similar sum. The sureties must be civil servants with a minimum rank of grade level 12 and must possess a property with a certificate of occupancy located in Port Harcourt to be deposited with the court.
The case is scheduled to commence trial on March 12, 2024.
