Maritime Workers Raise Concerns Over The Proposed Repeal Of Ports And Harbour Bill....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) have strongly opposed the proposed Ports and Harbour Bill in the National Assembly. This bill aims to repeal the existing Act that established the NPA.

During a joint briefing in Lagos, the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, and his NPA counterpart, Akinola Bodunde, clarified that the proposed bill does not target Davido, as some speculated. They emphasized that this was strictly a business venture and had no connection to their disagreement with Davido.

According to the unions, if this bill becomes law, it could jeopardize the country’s security and economy, potentially leading to job losses for many Nigerians, including NPA employees. They raised concerns that the bill might transfer harbor, jetty, and terminal operations into private hands, which they believe would not be in the best interest of the nation.

Furthermore, the unions asserted that the draft of the bill offered non-pensionable, non-transferable, and non-terminable work without access to terminal benefits, which they deemed unfair to workers. They called for the removal of the bill to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to creating five million jobs in Nigeria through the newly established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

In conclusion, the unions expressed their unwavering support for the existing Nigerian Ports Authority ACT and vowed to vehemently resist any attempts to advance this controversial bill. They demanded the complete withdrawal of the bill.
