The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Abia State on Special Duties, Mrs. Betty Emeka Obasi, has revealed that a total of 11,479 individuals, comprising both civil servants and pensioners, are yet to undergo verification in the State’s civil service verification program.

The state government has issued a caution to those who remain unverified, indicating that their names may be removed from the payment systems in the State.

Mrs. Obasi provided these statistics during a briefing held in Umuahia following the recent Executive Council Meeting, which was chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

She stated that, to date, 62,479 public servants, including pensioners, have successfully completed the verification process. However, some individuals either did not participate in the exercise or began but failed to complete the verification process.

Mrs. Obasi explained, “We established a verification committee consisting of representatives from the State Civil Service, Local Government, the pensions board, parastatals, and organized labor unions such as NLC, TUC, ICPC, to ensure the credibility of the verification process.”

She further elaborated on the situation, saying, “We have begun compiling the list of 11,479 individuals, including those who did not initiate the verification process or could not complete it. These names will be published, and those affected can review the reasons why they did not meet the criteria for full verification.”

Additionally, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, announced a two-week extension for workers and pensioners in the State to complete their verification and any necessary registration. He emphasized that those who remain unverified during this period may face removal from the payment system.

The Commissioner highlighted that this verification process and civil service reforms align with the core policies of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Furthermore, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, Rev Fr Christian Anokwuru, shared that a N15 million community project would be executed in each of the autonomous communities in the State as part of the “Community Choose Your Project” initiative. This program allows communities to select the projects of utmost importance to them, with the state government responsible for their execution. Benefiting communities would only need to contribute a 5 percent counterpart fee of the project’s cost.

‘Atiku Won’t Pick Senate President’ – Dino Melaye Declares.

The Deputy Director-General of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council, Dino Melaye, has pledged that an administration led by the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would not interfere in the selection of the Senate President or Speaker of the House of Representatives if elected.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Melaye made the declaration during an appearance on Arise Television, where he said the ADC would allow lawmakers to elect their leaders independently.

He maintained that the party was committed to democratic principles and an independent National Assembly.

“To start with, an Atiku presidency will not determine who is going to be the Senate president, the president of the Senate, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Atiku is a Democrat. ADC is a very democratic political party. So we are going to allow the people to elect their leaders,” he said.

Melaye argued that allowing lawmakers to choose their leaders would promote legislative independence and strengthen the National Assembly’s oversight of the executive arm of government.

He said an independent legislature would be better positioned to scrutinise government activities and hold the executive accountable.

“And I told you that wherever you have the members electing their leaders, there is some modicum of independence.

“So to start with, the ADC will make sure that the National Assembly is truly independent, and if the National Assembly is truly independent, that will drive their oversight functions over the Executive,” he said.

Speaking on how government spending would be monitored, the ADC campaign official said relevant National Assembly committees would be empowered to question government officials and examine public expenditure.

He specifically mentioned the Committees on Establishment, Finance, and Budget and Planning as possible channels for investigating government spending and ensuring accountability.

“The Committee on Establishment is responsible for questioning this type of spenders because they have direct oversight function over the State House. The committee on finance is there. The committee on budget and planning is there,” Melaye said.
