The court proceedings involving former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the United Kingdom regarding bribery accusations have been postponed to November 2025. The Westminster Magistrates Court announced the adjournment during a hearing on Monday, October 30.
Alison-Madueke, a former Nigerian minister, is facing trial for allegedly accepting a £100,000 bribe from certain oil companies, as reported by Naija News.
On October 2, Michael Snow, the district judge at the Westminster Magistrates Court in the United Kingdom, granted Alison-Madueke bail in the amount of £70,000 after deeming her a flight risk. Before granting bail, Snow imposed stringent conditions on her, including an 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and the mandatory wearing of an electronic monitoring tag.
Alison-Madueke, along with four other individuals, was apprehended in the United Kingdom in October 2015 on suspicion of bribery and money laundering.
In August 2023, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that they suspected Alison-Madueke of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding multimillion-pound oil and gas contracts. The NCA detailed on its website that Alison-Madueke “is alleged to have benefited from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, luxury vacations for her family, and the use of multiple London properties.”
Furthermore, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has submitted a warrant of arrest and an extradition request to the Crown Prosecution Service of the United Kingdom for the urgent return of Alison-Madueke.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed on October 2 that it had initiated the extradition of Mrs. Alison-Madueke from the United Kingdom to Nigeria to face 13 counts of money laundering charges filed against her by the anti-corruption agency. The EFCC alleged that the former minister, who served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015, embezzled $2.5 billion from the Nigerian government during her tenure.
