The reigning champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), Enyimba, concluded their journey in the inaugural Africa Football League on a disastrous note. Enyimba was paired with Moroccan outfit Wydad Athletic Club in the quarter-final double-header clash, and the Moroccan side emerged victorious in both encounters, much to the disappointment of Enyimba’s fans.
In the first leg, held in Akwa Ibom state, the two-time African champions suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of their Moroccan visitors. The club needed to make a comeback by winning the second leg by at least 2-0 to overturn the first-leg result, but their hopes were dashed.
During the return fixture on Thursday night, October 26, the Moroccan team, led by Ayoub El Amloud, quickly took the lead with a goal just four minutes into the game. In the 38th minute, Jamal Harkass added a second goal, and Yahia Attiyah Allah scored the third goal in the 43rd minute, sealing a 3-0 victory against the Elephants of Aba.
Ilyes Chetti nearly extended the North Africans’ lead to 4-0 in the 72nd minute, but Enyimba’s goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke, made a crucial save to deny the Moroccan team. Olorunleke was called upon again in the 78th minute, making another remarkable save to prevent a headed goal.
Enyimba faced additional concerns as two of their players, Ezekiel Ngomere and Murphy Ndukwu, required medical attention in the 84th minute after going down but were eventually able to stand again.
Wydad dominated the match with 63% possession, while Enyimba had 37%, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate defeat for the reigning NPFL champions.
Enyimba’s coach, Finidi George, and his team will return to Nigeria with at least $900,000, their participation allowance from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Due to the game in Morocco, their NPFL matchday five fixture against Remo Stars, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been indefinitely postponed.
