The presidential nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart from the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, have refrained from commenting on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the 2023 presidential election. The apex court, on Thursday, upheld the victory of President Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the presidential election that took place on February 25.
The Supreme Court, in its ruling, rejected the appeals made by Atiku and Obi, deeming their claims of fraud, violations of electoral law, and Tinubu’s eligibility to run for president as lacking merit. A seven-judge panel, presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro, dismissed all of Atiku and the PDP’s arguments regarding qualification, compliance with the Electoral Act, the requirement for 25% of votes in the Federal Capital Territory, and allegations of electoral irregularities.

Atiku, the PDP candidate, had also attempted to introduce new evidence, alleging that Tinubu had submitted a forged certificate from Chicago State University as proof of qualification when applying to run for the presidency. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court rejected Atiku’s plea to admit evidence from the American university, citing the expiration of the deadline for submitting fresh appeals.
In the case of Peter Obi’s appeal concerning the double nomination of Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the court held that the issue had already been addressed in its ruling on May 26.
As of the time this report was filed, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the presidential candidates for the PDP and LP, have not issued responses to the Supreme Court’s judgment. However, their respective political parties have released statements on the matter.
