The Ndi Imo Defenders group has strongly condemned the opposition’s suggestion that Governor Hope Uzodinma withdraw his re-election candidacy in favor of Owerri Zone candidates for the upcoming November 11 election, deeming it as malevolent and harmful. According to Stan Ezugu, the group’s President, such a call could undermine the Imo Charter of Equity, which aims to ensure equitable representation among the state’s elders and stakeholders.

The Imo Charter of Equity mandates the rotation of the governorship slot among the three senatorial zones—Orlu, Okigwe, and Owerri—for eight years each. The group reminded the opposition candidates that the Imo Elders’ Council had already recommended allowing Governor Uzodimma to complete the eight-year term for Orlu Zone before Owerri Zone assumes leadership.
Ezugu stressed the significance of the Imo State Charter of Equity, characterizing it as a political agreement designed to achieve equitable and balanced governance representation. He emphasized its role in maintaining political stability, unity, and the overall welfare of the state’s diverse population, asserting that no individual or group should be allowed to disrupt this important policy.
Rather than criticizing Governor Uzodimma, the group advocated for his commendation for supporting the charter of equity. They believe that this arrangement, which has been elusive for years, must be upheld to benefit the state’s development.
The Ndi Imo Defenders underscored the charter’s vital role in promoting fairness, unity, stability, and development within the state. By adhering to the charter’s principles, the state can harness its diverse population’s collective potential and work towards a more prosperous and harmonious future. The group emphasized that the potential of this policy must not be eroded by the self-interest of a few individuals who do not prioritize the well-being of Ndi Imo.
Furthermore, the group pointed out that Governor Uzodimma’s administration has demonstrated fairness in appointments and the distribution of essential amenities, including healthcare, education, and road infrastructure. They commended the governor for his commitment to the shared prosperity agenda and equitable project distribution, emphasizing that no particular zone has been favored in terms of projects and appointments.
