During the recent retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele urged critical stakeholders to unite in addressing economic challenges and security issues. He proposed a strategic partnership between the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and the National Assembly as a key strategy to effectively tackle the multifaceted challenges facing Nigeria.
The retreat, themed “Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms in Nigeria,” concluded with a renewed sense of hope for the country’s future. The retreat facilitated by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies provided a platform for open discussions on pressing issues that have burdened Nigerians for the past two decades.
Senator Bamidele emphasized the need for a collaborative approach between the executive and legislative branches to develop creative legislative frameworks in response to Nigeria’s socio-economic realities. He recommended regular sessions, similar to the quarterly executive-legislative meetings in Lagos State, where both branches can devise institutional approaches to address complex challenges.
Bamidele highlighted the importance of these sessions in aligning the National Assembly’s goals with President Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, addressing various challenges, and delivering essential public services efficiently. He emphasized that achieving the eight-point agenda required collective responsibility and strategic collaboration between both branches of government.
The senator identified key areas where the executive and legislature should collaborate to address Nigeria’s economic and political woes, such as reviewing the Land Use Act, strengthening the National Directorate of Employment, pursuing fiscal federalism, diversifying the economy, and standardizing social investments.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio concurred with Bamidele’s call for a common forum where lawmakers and members of the Federal Executive Council can collaborate to devise innovative legislative frameworks and tackle national challenges. Akpabio stressed the role of the National Assembly in creating an environment that fosters investments and national harmony through innovative legislation and effective oversight.
The retreat emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration and proactive legislative action to address Nigeria’s pressing issues and promote the nation’s well-being.
