Breaking: Nigerians Gather At Lekki Toll Gate To Mark Third Anniversary Of #EndSARS....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A multitude of Nigerians came together at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on the occasion of the third anniversary of the #EndSARS movement. The significant moment during the commemoration involved a procession by participants, which took place under the watchful eyes of a heavy police and Department of State Services (DSS) security presence.

Amnesty International, a prominent human rights organization, released a statement expressing deep concern. They emphasized that even after three years since the protests against police brutality in Nigeria, over 15 protesters who were arrested during the demonstrations are still incarcerated in the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and the Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre, both situated in Lagos.

The update on Amnesty International’s website states, “The Nigerian authorities have pressed false charges, such as theft, arson, unlawful firearm possession, and murder, against many of these protesters. Some detainees have reported experiencing torture.”

Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, firmly stated, “Our investigation reveals a flagrant disregard for human rights by Nigerian authorities. Detaining individuals for three years without a trial is a clear miscarriage of justice. It demonstrates the authorities’ lack of respect for due legal processes. These protesters must be released immediately and unconditionally.”

Among the detainees are seven #EndSARS protesters, including Daniel Joy-Igbo, Sodiq Adigun, Sunday Okoro, Olumide Fatai, Oluwole Isa, Shehu Anas, and Akiniran Oyetakin. They were arrested in Lagos in 2020 and are currently being held without a fair trial at Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre.

Daniel Joy-Igbo, a Benin-born #EndSARS protester who was arrested in Lagos in October 2020, provided a distressing account of his situation. He has been imprisoned without trial since his arraignment in December 2020, with no scheduled court appearance since.

Sodiq Adigun, who was also arrested in October 2020 and initially detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti, had this to say to Amnesty International: “Let the government release me. I have been detained since 2020 without trial. I am innocent. My life has been shattered. I need my liberty.”

In addition, eight #EndSARS protesters, namely Segun Adeniyi, Onuorah Odih, Jeremiah Lucky, Gideon Ikwujomah, Irinyemi Olorunwanbe, Quadri Azeez, Olamide Lekan, and Sadiq Riliwan, have remained incarcerated without a trial at the Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre in Lagos since 2020.

Isa Sanusi made a final plea, “All those detained solely for participating in peaceful #EndSARS protests must be released immediately and unconditionally.”
