Abubakar Fulata, the Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on university education, has emphasized the need for substantial salary increases for teachers in Nigeria to attain a high standard of education. According to him, primary school teachers should receive a minimum salary of N250,000, while secondary school teachers and university lecturers should be compensated with salaries of N500,000 and one million naira, respectively.
Fulata made these remarks during a one-day national stakeholders workshop focused on developing a roadmap for the Nigerian education sector (2023-2027). The workshop, organized by the Federal Ministry of Education, took place in Abuja.

The committee chairman stressed the importance of adequately compensating teachers to ensure the delivery of quality education, a practice observed in other countries. He urged Nigeria to allocate a substantial portion of its national budget, approximately 25 to 30 percent, to education to address the current challenges in the sector.
During the workshop, the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, expressed concerns about the disconnect between the education system and the nation’s society and economy. He acknowledged that the country’s education system needed significant improvements to bridge the gap between its vision and the reality on the ground.
Mamman noted the issue of high unemployment among graduates due to the perceived unemployability of those educated in the current system. He cited complaints from industries about the lack of job-ready graduates from universities.
The purpose of the workshop, according to Mamman, was to develop a roadmap that would serve as a problem-solving initiative to reset the education sector, spanning from basic to tertiary education. He also urged state governments to play their part in addressing the challenges in basic education, as a substantial burden falls on them.
Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko, highlighted the importance of the workshop in preparing the nation’s children for the future. He pointed out that despite the recognition of education’s significance, tangible results were still lacking, leading to inadequate attention to the sector and a growing disinterest among youths due to the difficulty in finding employment after academic pursuits.
