In a heart-wrenching video that has gone viral on social media, primary school students in Edo State kneel in a plea to the state government to address the appalling state of their school.
The footage, which has gained widespread attention, captures a concerned member of an unnamed community where the school is situated, openly criticizing the state government for neglecting the school. He vehemently accused the government of abandoning the community and refusing to undertake essential renovations for the “sole school that has faithfully served the community for many years.”
According to him, the school reported its deteriorating condition to the local government secretary, only to be advised to “relocate the children to schools situated in communities far away.”
In the video, this community representative, alongside the distressed pupils, humbly implores the government to provide assistance and restore the school. He expressed his concern that the school is on the brink of collapse, with teachers struggling to continue classes. The situation turned critical when three classrooms collapsed, leaving both students and educators apprehensive about entering the remaining unstable rooms.
They contacted the local government’s education secretary to bring attention to the dire state of the school. Unfortunately, the response they received was a suggestion to transfer the students to a different primary school. This proposition was met with frustration, as the affected community members reminisced about their years at the same school and questioned the justice of denying their children access to it. The secretary maintained that they couldn’t take action and recommended relocating the children to schools located in communities far from their own, a solution seen as impractical due to the considerable distance involved.
