Exploring Five Pioneering AI-Infused Healthcare Efforts By Google Health In Africa....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Every day throughout the African continent, individuals rely on Google products such as Search, YouTube, and Fitbit to gain insights into their health and well-being. What many may not realize is that Google has been actively researching how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance healthcare outcomes and empower partners to provide improved health services. This encompasses everything from enhancing maternal health results to creating practical digital tools for healthcare professionals.

In anticipation of the upcoming Africa HealthTech Summit in Kigali, Rwanda—an event that brings together a diverse array of digital health innovators and public health experts to share knowledge and ideas aimed at transforming healthcare in Africa—Google is sharing its collaborative efforts with partners across Africa in researching and exploring new AI-powered healthcare tools.

1. Skin Condition Recognition with Images:
Google Lens now allows users across Africa to search for information about skin conditions using images, a feature initially introduced in the US and Japan earlier this year. Users can take a photo, upload it to Lens, and discover visually similar matches, making it easier to identify and understand skin issues without relying solely on written descriptions.

2. Enhancing Maternal Health in Kenya:
Google is working with Jacaranda Health, a Kenyan nonprofit focused on improving health outcomes for mothers and infants in government hospitals. Their aim is to validate the use of AI in clinical settings, with a particular focus on ultrasounds. AI models can assist less experienced ultrasound operators in low-resource settings, addressing the shortage of experts and increasing accessibility for pregnant individuals.

3. Building Healthcare Apps for Workers:
Google’s Open Health Stack is now available for healthcare developers in Africa to build mobile-first, technology-based healthcare solutions. These tools facilitate the adoption of the HL7 FHIR standard and are designed to improve care coordination and data quality. Google is also collaborating with Kabarak University and IntelliSOFT Consulting to host Open Health Stack bootcamps, enhancing the skills of local developers.

4. Tuberculosis Screening with AI:
Google has partnered with an AI-based organization led by Right to Care, a not-for-profit entity with extensive experience in TB care in Africa. This collaboration aims to provide AI-powered TB screenings across Sub-Saharan Africa, helping to detect the disease early and reduce its spread. The partners have committed to conducting 100,000 free AI-powered TB screenings as part of this initiative.

5. Supporting Emergency Obstetric Care Access in Nigeria:
Google has introduced a tool in Nigeria, developed in collaboration with the OnTIME consortium, to assist governments and public health organizations in addressing challenges related to accessing emergency obstetric care. Using Google’s internal directions API, which powers navigation in Google Maps, decision-makers can access data on average travel times to the nearest emergency obstetric facilities in various regions, enabling them to identify areas with limited geographic access to life-saving care.

These initiatives underline Google’s commitment to harnessing AI for healthcare improvements across the African continent.
