Deputy Governor Points To Colonial Legacy As Cause Of Environmental Challenges
Deputy Governor Points To Colonial Legacy As Cause Of Environmental Challenges....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has asserted that the environmental challenges facing Nigeria have their roots in the actions of colonial rulers. Speaking as the special guest of honor at the 68th annual conference of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) in Lagos, Hamzat highlighted that post-colonial industrialization and globalization have further exacerbated these issues.
The Deputy Governor, represented by Mrs. Oloruntoyin Atekoja, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Art, emphasized the interconnectedness of Nigeria’s history with its environment. He stressed the importance of understanding the environmental history to make informed decisions regarding the ecosystem’s challenges.

Hamzat pointed out that the pre-colonial era’s environmental conditions laid the foundation for the challenges Nigeria faces today, such as deforestation, soil erosion, pollution, and ecosystem degradation. During the colonial period, natural resources were exploited for economic gain, often at the expense of environmental consequences. After gaining independence, Nigeria witnessed industrialization and globalization, which further aggravated environmental issues.
Efforts have been made by governments and non-governmental organizations to restore the ecosystem, but Hamzat emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach involving government intervention and community participation to address these challenges effectively.
The President of HSN, Prof. Samuel Aghalino, explained that the conference’s theme, “The Nigerian Environment Since the Pre-Colonial Period,” was chosen to encourage participants to brainstorm solutions to positively impact Nigeria’s global standing.
During the Kenneth Dike Memorial Lecture, guest lecturer Prof. Ben Naanen, a professor of History and Economics at the University of Port Harcourt, stressed the importance of government addressing environmental issues, especially flooding and ecosystem pollution. He suggested that the government and oil companies should initiate programs to clean up the Niger Delta region as a solution to the environmental challenges it faces.

Rejection of Helen Prest’s Claims: The court dismissed claims by former beauty queen Helen Prest, who asserted she was also a spouse through a Kalabari customary marriage.

Lack of Evidence: Justice Odusanya described Prest’s customary marriage claim as an “afterthought,” noting her inconsistent past descriptions of her relationship with the deceased and the total lack of documentary or photographic evidence.

-
Resolution of Estate: The judgment grants Mrs. Ajayi and her children all requested reliefs, including her entitlement to one-third of the personal estate and exclusive rights to apply for letters of administration.
