The Defence Headquarters has affirmed its commitment to staying one step ahead of the tactics employed by terrorists and extremist groups, thwarting their destructive activities that pose threats to the national economy and the populace.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, conveyed this message during a media briefing held at the DHQ on Thursday, October 12.

He emphasized that the armed forces would persist in identifying and eliminating the safe havens used by terrorists and insurgents throughout the nation. Notably, some of these havens share borders with neighboring countries, which complicates military operations.

Nevertheless, the Defence spokesperson assured that both the military and other security agencies were diligently working to infiltrate these hideouts and incapacitate the terrorists and insurgents.

Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba stated, “These safe havens, in essence, serve as a support base for insurgent activities, facilitating the flow of funding, materials, weaponry, fighters, command, and control that sustains the terrorism and insurgency we face. These safe havens are dispersed across various theaters, encompassing locations from the tumbuns in the North East to national parks, game reserves, and forests scattered across the country.”

He further mentioned the successful operation to dismantle one such safe haven in Aku Forest, situated in the Okigwe local government area of Imo State in the southeast. Troops discovered appalling activities within the camp, with extremists engaging in gruesome acts, including cannibalism and heinous atrocities.

Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba urged the public to report any individuals they find suspicious to the security agencies. He emphasized that citizens’ cooperation in reporting such activities plays a vital role in addressing the security challenges facing the nation and enhancing the efforts of the military and security agencies in safeguarding the country against terrorists and criminals.
