Currently, Western Afghanistan is in a state of chaos following another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 that struck the region. This recent event comes at a time when the government is still reeling from the loss of over two thousand lives due to Saturday’s devastating earthquake that shook various parts of the country.
The fresh tremors were confirmed on Monday by the United States Geological Survey and witnessed by local residents in the affected area. A doctor in the region described Monday’s earthquake as “quite intense” and reported that people sought refuge in parks, open spaces, and gardens. He also noted that the mental well-being of the population had been severely affected by the deadly earthquake on Saturday, with many patients suffering from mental shock.
The earthquake on the weekend, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, caused significant destruction in thirteen villages within Herat province’s Zindah Jan district. Reuters reported that more than 2,400 people lost their lives in the earthquakes over the weekend. The Taliban administration stated that the Saturday earthquakes in western Afghanistan occurred approximately 35 km (20 miles) northwest of Herat city, with one registering a magnitude of 6.3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
These events have been recorded as among the deadliest earthquakes globally this year, following the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February, which claimed an estimated 50,000 lives.
In the latest update, Janan Sayeeq, a spokesman for the Ministry of Disasters, revealed that the death toll had risen to 2,445, but he revised the number of injured individuals to “more than 2,000.” Initially, he had reported 9,240 injuries. Sayeeq also confirmed that 1,320 houses had been damaged or destroyed. The Red Crescent had previously reported a death toll of 500 on Sunday.
The situation demands urgent provisions of food, drinking water, medicine, clothing, and tents for rescue and relief efforts. Suhail Shaheen, the head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, emphasized the need for these essentials and confirmed that ten rescue teams were operating in the affected area, which shares a border with Iran.
The Kwara State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected key logistics provider for criminal gangs and bandits operating within the state. Supported by the House of Representatives Minority Caucus, acting National Chairman Peter Ameh argued that the current administration has failed to produce the necessary results for good governance. The statement emphasized that leadership is a responsibility rather than a right, suggesting that the honorable path for an official who cannot alleviate citizens’ suffering is to step down.
