Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta (MAPOLY), Ogun State, have taken to the school gates to protest against an increase in acceptance fees for newly admitted students and other issues.
Around 7 a.m. on Monday, the students gathered at the institution’s entrance to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the raised acceptance fees and the delayed release of their results. The protest was accompanied by the presence of the Nigerian Police Force to provide security. Demonstrators displayed placards bearing messages like #No To Increment of Tuition Fee, #Rector Must Go, #Release our Result ASAP, and more.
Babatunde Adelola, the Students Union Governor of the institution, stated that the protest stemmed from the management’s decision to raise acceptance fees from N35,000 to N50,500. He also expressed frustration with the administration’s reasons for the fee hike, citing inadequate state government subsidies as the cause.

Adelola further criticized the prolonged delay in releasing students’ results, with some semester results taking up to a year to be issued. He emphasized that this delay negatively impacts students as they are unsure of their academic standing and how to prepare for upcoming exams.
“We have many reasons to protest. Recently, the school said they are not getting funding from the state government and they need to generate funds internally, which was why they increased the acceptance fee from N35,000 to N50,500,” Adelola explained.
The protest also voiced concerns about the potential for further fee increases if the acceptance fee rise is tolerated. Olamide Ojelade, another student, expressed fear that higher acceptance fees might lead to increased school fees.
In response, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajibola, claimed that the management was unaware of the students’ grievances as they had not communicated their concerns. He stressed the importance of students properly channeling their complaints to allow for a meaningful dialogue and resolution of the issues.

Reacting to the verdict, Adeyanju emphasized that under Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is legally bound to enforce decisions made by the Supreme Court without delay.
To give full effect to the judgment, Adeyanju urged the electoral body to immediately update its official portal by removing the names of candidates from political parties impacted by the ruling. He maintained that the commission must execute all necessary administrative steps promptly to ensure its official records accurately reflect the Supreme Court’s directives.

The directive was made public by the State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, while briefing journalists in Umuahia following the state’s monthly Security Council meeting chaired by the governor. Flanked by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (rtd.), the Commissioner noted that Governor Otti explicitly instructed security agencies to ensure a level playing field and grant express approval to any political party requesting venues for campaigns.
Commander Ubah praised the governor as a true democrat practicing politics without bitterness, explaining that parties are free to utilize stadiums and public facilities upon paying the standard fees. He emphasized that with this open access, mischief-makers will have no excuses, warning that anyone attempting to disrupt public peace or perpetrate mayhem will face the full wrath of the law. Security agencies have consequently committed to leveraging state support to deliver completely rancour-free campaigns and elections.
