The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has officially reopened Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede, and Ile-Epo markets, which were recently closed due to unsanitary conditions and environmental violations.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, made the announcement in Lagos, stressing the importance of stringent compliance measures to protect public health and prevent future health crises.
Gbadegesin stated that the reopening of the markets was contingent on their full compliance with necessary conditions. Following extensive renovations and adherence to compliance measures, including the implementation of strict conditions and a mandatory undertaking for reopening, Ladipo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alamutu Ologede Market, and Ile-Epo Oke Odo Market are now open for business transactions.

The conditions for reopening include the establishment of designated waste collection points, installation of blockwork fences and platforms for double dino bin placement, procurement of double dino bins for waste containment, commitment to ensuring continuous market cleanliness through sustainable waste policing, enforcement of proper waste disposal regulations, engagement of bin keepers, collaboration with accredited waste management operators for timely waste removal, prompt payment of waste bills, and the prevention of unauthorized vending.
Gbadegesin emphasized that unclean markets pose significant health risks, including the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, Ebola, and malaria. He warned that any future violations would result in harsher penalties, including the permanent closure of offending markets.
Market executives and traders were urged to prioritize hygiene in their trading activities, as this would benefit both them and their customers. Local government authorities will be responsible for monitoring market operations to ensure compliance with the established conditions.
Gbadegesin encouraged the public to report sanitation lapses promptly to LAWMA and reiterated the agency’s zero tolerance policy for reckless waste dumping in markets, with defaulting markets facing closure and heavy fines.
For waste management-related concerns in your area, you can contact LAWMA’s toll-free numbers: 07080601020 and 617.
It should be noted that on September 30, LAWMA ordered the immediate closure of Ladipo Market, Mushin, due to various environmental offenses, including reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills.
