As part of its efforts to promote girls’ access to education, the Bauchi State government, through the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), is set to provide conditional cash transfers of N5,000 and N10,000 to girls in junior and senior secondary schools, respectively, to support them in completing their secondary education.
A total of 16,260 girls in Bauchi have been identified as beneficiaries of this program. To be eligible for the initiative, each beneficiary must maintain an average school attendance of at least 80 percent per term.

Dr. Jamila Mohammed Dahiru, the Bauchi State AGILE focal person and the state commissioner for education, revealed these details during a media round table in her office over the weekend. She explained that the cash transfers would be made every term to motivate the girls to continue their education until graduation.
Additionally, the AGILE project will incorporate digital education programs aimed at equipping the girls with ICT skills, making them self-reliant, and enabling them to pursue higher education in tertiary institutions.
Dr. Jamila emphasized that the AGILE project is focused on implementing innovative approaches to enhance the education sector, fostering effective and efficient learning processes within a conducive environment. It aims to provide opportunities for girls who dropped out of school due to economic constraints to return to complete their secondary education.
The project also includes plans for the construction and renovation of 120 schools, complete with furniture, as part of its school expansion component.
Dr. Dahiru highlighted the importance of addressing the reproductive and nutritional needs of the beneficiaries and noted that soft skills such as shoe making, tailoring, catering, and others would be incorporated into the program.
Furthermore, stakeholders including parents, School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), and teachers will receive training to ensure proper implementation, monitoring, ownership, and sustainability of the AGILE initiative.
AGILE is a World Bank-assisted project under the Federal Ministry of Education, with the goal of improving secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls aged between 10 and 24.
