The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu regarding the dire state of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. In a statement, the Lagos and Ogun Chairmen of MURIC, Dr. Busari Ademola and Alhaji Jimoh Alao, expressed concern over the dilapidated condition of the 81km federal highway, which has become a perilous route for commuters.
The statement called on the federal government to revisit the construction of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, which was originally built over 40 years ago but has since deteriorated. Despite the re-award of the reconstruction contract in 2018, there has been little progress on the road.

The chairmen emphasized the harsh conditions faced by road users along the Ijaiye-Alakuko axis of Lagos, including deep potholes and hazards. They urged President Tinubu, relevant authorities, and agencies to expedite the construction of a safe and motorable expressway to save lives.
MURIC also expressed sympathy for the thousands of Nigerians who must endure the road’s deplorable state and called for hope, reassuring that relief is forthcoming as the Lagos and Ogun governments will address the issue without political bureaucracy.
Additionally, the federal government proposed a joint rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta expressway with the Ogun State government on August 31. This proposal aims to involve state governments in road construction and management, potentially speeding up infrastructure development in the region.
