There was a commotion at the National Assembly on Wednesday when a ministerial nominee named Balarabe Abbas collapsed during his screening by the Nigerian Senate.
The nominee had just finished reading out his profile before the incident occurred, leading to the Senate convening a closed session.
Earlier, we reported that lawmakers resumed plenary to commence the screening of three new ministerial candidates nominated by President Bola Tinubu.
The nominees being screened on that day were Balarabe Abbas Lawal from Kaduna State, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State, and Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had previously read a letter from President Tinubu, requesting the confirmation of these three additional ministerial nominees.
Akpabio explained that Abbas was nominated to replace the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, who had not undergone Senate screening and clearance due to security concerns.
It’s worth noting that in August 2023, the Senate screened and approved 45 ministerial nominees, all of whom have since been sworn in as ministers, while three nominees were rejected.
