The Abuja-based Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has rejected the petition lodged by Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, contesting the election victory of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the March 18 election.

Governor Fubara, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had been declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During the judgment delivered on Monday, the tribunal, consisting of three judges, dismissed Tonye-Cole’s lawsuit on the grounds that the national leadership of the APC withdrew its support for the case against Fubara.

Additionally, the tribunal dismissed the petitions filed by Beatrice Itubo, the Labour Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State, and Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the gubernatorial candidate of the Accord Party (AP).

The court also dismissed the petition brought by Innocent Ekwu, the gubernatorial candidate of the Alliance Peoples Movement (APM), deeming it to be lacking in merit. Additionally, the tribunal imposed a fine of N500,000 against the petitioner.

The petitioners had approached the tribunal to challenge INEC’s announcement of Fubara as the victor.

In its judgment, the three-judge tribunal, led by Justice Cletus Emifonye, ruled that the petitioners had failed to substantiate their claims and that their lawsuits lacked merit, resulting in their dismissal.
