The appeals slated for the October 5th hearing are identified as SC/CR/1394/2022, NNAMDI KANU V. FED. REP OF NIGERIA, and SC/CR/1391/2023, FED. REP OF NIG VS NNAMDI KANU.
Mike Ozekhome (SAN), the chief legal counsel for the imprisoned leader of the pro-Biafra group, officially confirmed the hearing date in a statement on Saturday.
Ozekhome stated: “The following appeal has been scheduled for a hearing at the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday, October 5th, 2023 (SC/CR/1394/2022, NNAMDI KANU V. FED.REP OF NIGERIA; and SC/CR/1391/2023, FED. REP OF NIG VS NNAMDI KANU.”
It should be recalled that Nnamdi Kanu, with the representation of his legal team, had previously won the appeal at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. In October 2022, the appellate court acquitted Kanu of the 15 counts charged against him and prohibited any further arrest, detention, or trial based on the existing charges.
Subsequently, the Federal Government appealed against this judgment at the Supreme Court and secured an order from another panel of the Court of Appeal to suspend the judgment of the appellate court. Nevertheless, Kanu has remained in solitary confinement at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility, nearly a year after the verdict that cleared him of charges.
