The Akwa Ibom Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has upheld the victory of Pastor Umo Eno from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the legitimate governor of the state.
The tribunal dismissed the case filed by Senator Bassey Albert Akpan and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), marked as suit EPT/AKW/GOV/01/2023, aimed at invalidating Eno’s election.

Headed by Justice Adekunle Adeleye, the tribunal supported preliminary objections regarding jurisdiction and the qualification of the 2nd Respondent. It ruled that Eno was qualified for the election.
The tribunal cited a prior Supreme Court judgment against Governor Eno by Akan Okon, stating it as binding and accusing the petitioners of abusing the judicial process by revisiting a matter already addressed by the apex court.
Furthermore, the tribunal decided that the petitioners lacked the standing to challenge the conduct of the primaries by the 3rd Respondent, PDP.
The tribunal also ruled that Eno did not present a forged WAEC certificate, as the summoned WAEC official authenticated it. Additionally, it emphasized that there is no legal requirement for a specific order of names on a document, as no one else claims the 1981 and 1983 WAEC certificates in question.
Regarding a witness, PW16, presented by Bassey Albert Akpan, the tribunal deemed him an impostor. The witness claimed a lengthy 22-year academic journey but exhibited a lack of knowledge about certain basic information and appeared in court with a mask and fez cap, raising suspicions.
Overall, the tribunal dismissed the petition as lacking merit and confirmed Eno’s election as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Eno’s legal team expressed contentment with the ruling and called for unity to advance the state.
However, counsel for the petitioners, Tunde Olaola, noted that the tribunal’s decision is not final and that there is an option for an appeal.
