The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with its accredited waste management consultant, Mottainai Recycling Ltd, inaugurated a recycling center at the Ojoo terminal in Ibadan on Monday.
During the event, Mrs. Ahmed B.D., the Director of Environment for Akinyele Local Government, highlighted that the initiative’s primary objective was to create awareness about climate change among traders, market women, and the general public. She emphasized the dangers and repercussions of haphazard waste disposal and other unsustainable waste management practices.
Mrs. Ahmed encouraged market women to engage in waste sorting and discouraged them from disposing of waste in inappropriate locations.
The Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Oluwaseun Fasuhanmi, spoke earlier and expressed that the initiative stemmed from a genuine desire to maintain the cleanliness of Oyo State. She mentioned that the launch was part of the activities marking World Cleanup Day 2023. Ms. Fasuhanmi noted that this hub is the second one established in the state, with the first one being inaugurated in Iseyin Local Government a few months ago.
She stressed that the initiative is driven by a sincere aspiration to inspire individuals to adopt lifestyles that align with environmental conservation efforts.
Fasuhanmi underscored the importance of waste management, portraying it as a collective responsibility that binds us all in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future.

The Chief Sustainability Officer, Ms. Deborah Fadeyi, mentioned that the World Cleanup Day event at Ojoo Market was a unique endeavor. She added that the introduction of this innovative hub aims to empower young people and educate market users about the conversion of waste into valuable resources, unlocking wealth creation potential.
She explained that the initiative aims to bring waste infrastructure closer to the people, eliminating excuses for illegal dumping in the median and water channels, particularly during the rainy season.
“The hub aims to promote a sustainable environment, create job opportunities, and empower the Ojo community to embrace recycling as an effective waste management practice with financial incentives, contributing to a movement of environmentally conscious residents,” she stated.
During the initiative, approximately 2,000 kilograms of recyclable materials, including plastic, cartons, and aluminum cans, were successfully collected through the collaboration of volunteers and other stakeholders.
The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) from Akinyele local government, Youth Corps Members, Mottainai Ambassadors, and volunteers from various NGOs.
