President Bola Tinubu has underscored the vital need to establish a sustainable investment-friendly environment for agriculture in Africa, aiming to attain food security across the continent.

Tinubu conveyed this message during the High-Level Meeting titled “Attracting Investments in Land Restoration, Food Systems, and Rural Transformation in Africa,” which took place alongside the 78th UN General Assembly in New York.

The event, jointly organized by AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria and its continental counterpart, aimed to explore innovative solutions, investment prospects, and partnerships to enhance productivity, resilience, and sustainability in African agriculture, particularly among smallholder farmers.

Tinubu, represented by Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’dua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, stressed the imperative of enabling smallholder farmers in Nigeria and the continent to access financing for agricultural development.

Additionally, he addressed issues such as poor governance, insecurity, climate change, land degradation, limited access to financing, infrastructure gaps, technology adoption, policy inconsistencies, and cumbersome regulatory processes that have hindered agricultural progress in Africa.

Despite these challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism that the meeting would encourage discussions on solutions to empower rural communities and farmers, particularly in terms of financial accessibility.

He also highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts among African countries to expand the economy through agriculture and eliminate financing restrictions for smallholder farmers, emphasizing the need for collaborative endeavors to achieve these goals.
