Obi expressed distress over the erosion of the fundamental principles underpinning Nigeria’s democracy, noting that these values are deteriorating day by day.

In a statement personally signed by the former Anambra State Governor and released via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Obi highlighted the prevalence of endemic corruption, constitutional abuse, disregard for the rule of law, and transactional politics within all three branches of government in Nigeria.

Despite these challenges, Obi affirmed his commitment to providing the strong leadership that Nigeria requires, emphasizing his belief in the possibility of a better Nigeria. He encouraged fellow citizens not to lose hope in the face of current events in the country.

The LP presidential candidate made these remarks in his statement commemorating the 2023 International Democracy Day.

He stated, “On this year’s celebration of International Democracy Day, we must remind ourselves of the need to work together to build and strengthen our nation’s democracy.

“As witnessed in the country today, the mindless erosion of the very ideals and principles on which Nigeria’s democracy was founded, if left unchecked, will only propel the nation deeper into lawlessness.

“The current trend of endemic corruption, abuse of the constitution, disrespect for the rule of law, and transactional politics that permeates the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government continue to conflict with our nation’s commitment to democracy.

“As a result, our beloved nation is gradually moving away from the foundations of true democracy. Gradually, we are losing one of the most significant intangible assets that strengthens a nation: respect for the rule of law.

“I urge all Nigerians to remain dedicated to the construction and reinforcement of our nation’s democracy. Once again, I affirm my commitment to a new and genuinely democratic Nigeria. I am engaged in this struggle solely for the improvement of our society.

“My vision of a New and genuinely democratic Nigeria stems from a profound belief that Nigeria, if provided with the sound leadership that I offer, will benefit every Nigerian. We must not abandon our nation because a New and Genuinely Democratic Nigeria is Achievable.

Happy International Democracy Day, Nigeria.
