Controversial Past Fades As Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee Confirms New Senior Advocate....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has officially designated a new senior advocate, despite her prior notoriety for smuggling unauthorized materials into an examination facility a few years ago.

Benedicta Lopez Daudu, who faced suspension and infamy for cheating during her master’s degree exam at the University of Jos in 2016, has now been included among the approximately 70 new lawyers confirmed as senior advocates of Nigeria by the LPPC. These appointments are made by a body under the Supreme Court, and achieving this distinction, often sought after by lawyers, is understood to bestow additional professional privileges.

Among the newly designated senior lawyers are Kayode Ajulo, an attorney based in Abuja, Funmi Falana, the wife of renowned human rights advocate Femi Falana, and Folashade Alli, reportedly the daughter of Afe Babalola, a prominent figure in the Nigerian legal community.

While most of the individuals on the list have no public controversies, Benedicta Lopez Daudu’s elevation may raise questions about the selection process for this position, which has become increasingly contentious, causing divisions and envy within the legal profession.

As of the time of reporting, Ms. Daudu could not be reached for comment, and a spokesperson for the Supreme Court did not respond to inquiries about her promotion. This development comes at a sensitive moment for Nigeria’s judiciary, which has faced growing challenges related to corruption and injustice.

Although Ms. Daudu has since transitioned to her role as a law professor at Taraba State University, her history of examination malpractice at the University of Jos was well-documented in public records, making it a point of scrutiny for the LPPC. Additionally, she was previously excused from President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption panel due to her involvement in the cheating incident.

While certain media outlets claimed in 2021 that Ms. Daudu had been absolved of wrongdoing and her privileges had been restored, the University of Jos disputed these claims. The university’s registrar clarified that she had sued the school for terminating her employment as a law lecturer following her cheating scandal, which resulted in her suspension. The court ruled against her argument that she should not have been dismissed after the suspension, and she subsequently resigned from her position effective November 28, 2019.

However, she continued to contest the school’s disciplinary actions against her, ultimately reaching an out-of-court resolution that allowed her to return as a student, receive her outstanding salaries during the suspension, and discontinue all pending lawsuits against the university. Despite these developments, she was not reinstated as a staff member, and the university did not issue an apology.
