The affected states include Lagos, Osun, FCT, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Zamfara, Jigawa, and Kano.

The co-chairs of the task force will be Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Other members will include Anyaike Chukwuma, the Ministry’s Director of Public Health, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Ministry of Information, and the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Healthcare Delivery (NTLC).

The minister highlighted the urgent need for the task force to operate in emergency mode to prevent the further spread of diphtheria to additional states and provide assistance to affected communities. He stressed the importance of extensive mobilization and awareness efforts, particularly with children returning to school, to inform the public about the disease, its risks, and preventive measures.

The minister also emphasized the necessity of collaboration with state governors to secure counterpart funding, promote ownership, and facilitate large-scale mobilization efforts. Diphtheria is an extremely contagious disease transmitted through airborne droplets or contaminated personal items.
