In response to the increasing spread of diphtheria across several states, the federal government has taken swift action by setting up an emergency task force to address the threat.
Muhammad Pate, Minister of Health and Social Welfare, made this announcement in Abuja on Thursday. The primary goal of the task force is to contain the disease, which has been detected in 14 states, with Kano serving as the epicenter.

The affected states include Lagos, Osun, FCT, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Zamfara, Jigawa, and Kano.
The co-chairs of the task force will be Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Other members will include Anyaike Chukwuma, the Ministry’s Director of Public Health, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Ministry of Information, and the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Healthcare Delivery (NTLC).
The minister highlighted the urgent need for the task force to operate in emergency mode to prevent the further spread of diphtheria to additional states and provide assistance to affected communities. He stressed the importance of extensive mobilization and awareness efforts, particularly with children returning to school, to inform the public about the disease, its risks, and preventive measures.
The minister also emphasized the necessity of collaboration with state governors to secure counterpart funding, promote ownership, and facilitate large-scale mobilization efforts. Diphtheria is an extremely contagious disease transmitted through airborne droplets or contaminated personal items.

He said Tinubu’s continuity in office was necessary to sustain ongoing reforms and promote equity, justice, and fairness across the country.
Buhari made the call while speaking with journalists at the end of a three-day women’s capacity-building programme held in Oyo North.
He commended the President for creating an enabling environment that allowed lawmakers to initiate empowerment programmes targeting women, especially in small and medium-scale enterprises within agricultural value chains.
The senator disclosed that 120 women from across Oyo State benefited from the training, with each receiving ₦100,000 to support their businesses.
He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to improve their livelihoods and continue supporting the administration’s policies.
Buhari also encouraged participants to pray for the President, describing him as committed to improving the welfare of women and youths.
He explained that beneficiaries were drawn from all three senatorial districts in Oyo State, expressing confidence that Tinubu would emerge as the APC presidential candidate in 2027.
According to him, both he and the President recognise the crucial role of women in securing electoral victory for the party.
He added that more empowerment and capacity-building programmes would be rolled out in the near future to further support women and small business owners.
