The British High Commission in Nigeria has expressed its commitment to backing a free, fair, and credible Bayelsa governorship election slated for November 11. During a meeting with the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Udengs Eradiri, at his Yenagoa residence, Hamish Tye, the political secretary of the commission, made this pledge.

Mr. Tye clarified that the commission’s visit aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the key issues shaping the upcoming election and to better grasp the policy platforms of all participating candidates.

“We have come to Bayelsa to meet the governorship candidates and get a better idea of the issues they are going to be contesting in the election,” explained Mr. Tye. “We also want to know what the people are going to be voting on the basis of and to get a better idea of what each candidate would like to do while in office.”

He emphasized that the commission did not have specific demands but emphasized the importance of a peaceful and credible election. He also mentioned discussions about the possibility of a peace accord.

Mr. Eradiri noted that the visit provided an opportunity to assess the candidates’ personalities and their commitment to peace and security. He discussed his agenda for governing Bayelsa and raised concerns about alleged vote buying through government appointments.

“They promised 17 appointments per polling unit and are paying N100,000 each,” said Mr. Eradiri. “As for me, I am creating a lot of jobs for young people.”

He expressed gratitude for his efforts to create jobs and criticized the government’s late response to youth employment, which he viewed as a form of vote buying.

However, Governor Douye Diri’s chief press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, dismissed the allegations, describing them as laughable and suggested that Mr. Eradiri focus on his campaign.
