Romney, who is 76 years old, made the suggestion during an interview with the BBC while also announcing his decision not to seek re-election to Congress once his term expires in January 2025. He stressed the importance of a fresh generation of leaders taking the reins of the nation, emphasizing that by the end of another term, he would be in his mid-80s.

“While I’m not running for re-election, I’m not retiring from the fight,” declared the former governor of Massachusetts, hinting that he has not ruled out the possibility of entering the 2024 presidential election.

Romney, a prominent critic of both Biden and Trump, who are currently leading candidates for the Democratic and Republican nominations respectively, identifies with what he calls the “wise arm” of the Republican Party. He has frequently expressed his concerns about the populist wing championed by Trump, which constitutes a significant portion of the party. Romney has accused this faction of focusing on divisive issues and political infighting rather than addressing critical national matters.

In 2020, Senator Romney made history by voting to convict President Trump during his impeachment trial, becoming the first senator ever to vote to convict a member of his own party.

It was gathered that Fubara has already secured the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the 2027 governorship poll in Rivers State.

Although Blessing Fubara shares the same surname and hails from the same Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area as the incumbent Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, it remains unclear whether both men are related.

Confirming the development, the Rivers State Chairman of the NDC, Success Jack, stated that Blessing Fubara is among the party’s governorship aspirants, but noted that he could not verify any family ties between him and the governor.

He said, “Yes, he (Blessing Fubara Snr.) picked up his expression of interest form yesterday in Abuja, and we are fully prepared to win not just the governorship election, but every election in Rivers State during the 2027 general elections.”

Recall that Blessing Fubara recently dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the NDC about two weeks ago.

Speaking after he was welcomed into the party by the NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, alongside other party stakeholders in Abuja, Fubara described the NDC as “a moving train,” stressing that his decision to join the party was driven by the interest of Rivers people.

According to him, the future of Rivers State is at a critical point, adding that residents must reclaim the state and expressing confidence that Rivers would be restored after the 2027 elections.
