In a distressing turn of events, the kidnappers who abducted eight graduates from Akwa Ibom State en route to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sokoto State while passing through Zamfara State have demanded an additional N200 million as ransom. This demand comes after the victims’ families had already paid N13 million to the kidnappers. These young individuals, who were abducted on August 17, have been held captive for 26 days, causing immense anguish among their families.

Relatives have resorted to fasting and prayer, deeply concerned about the deteriorating health conditions of their loved ones in captivity. The kidnappers initially set a deadline for the outstanding N8 million to be paid by September 6, which was later extended to September 9 following pleas from the victims’ parents. However, the families are now faced with the daunting task of raising an additional N200 million, a sum they find impossible to afford.
The situation has raised questions about the government and security agencies’ failure to rescue the victims after three weeks of abduction, leading to frustration and disappointment among concerned individuals in Akwa Ibom State. The lack of progress in this case continues to be a subject of controversy and concern.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s response to inquiries about their efforts to collaborate with the Zamfara State Command for the victims’ rescue was unresponsive as the spokesperson claimed to be in a meeting and ended the call before further explanation could be given.
