The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on International Boundary Dispute has ordered an immediate halt to the demarcation process that aimed to transfer the Sina Area in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State to the Republic of Cameroon. The committee, led by Chairman Hon. Beni Lar, issued this directive during a hearing focusing on ongoing boundary disputes along the Nigeria-Cameroon border, spanning from the Lake Chad region to the Cross River estuaries.
The hearing also aimed to assess the roles played by the military, para-military, and security agencies in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and territorial integrity. In attendance were key figures, including Adamu Adaji, Director General of the National Boundary Commission, a representative from Sina Area, Adamu Kamale, Solicitor General of the Federation Beatrice Jedy-Agba (representing the Attorney General), and representatives from various security agencies.
Chairman Beni Lar emphasized the need for continued engagement with the concerned communities and the National Boundary Commission to find a resolution. She stated that the demarcation exercise should be paused until the disputes are resolved, with a planned fact-finding mission to Adamawa to compile a comprehensive report.
Adamu Adaji, Director General of the National Boundary Commission, explained that the demarcation was conducted in compliance with an International Court of Justice ruling. He mentioned that over 2,214 pillars had been placed along the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary, and the demarcation process was based on historical treaties and agreements between colonial powers.
Adamu Kamale, representing Sina Area, asserted that the disputed region was unquestionably Nigerian territory and was never a settlement. He pointed out that the community had not been adequately considered in the demarcation process and highlighted the specific criteria used for various regions along the border.
The committee’s discussion also covered the role of the military, para-military, and security agencies in protecting Nigeria’s borders, addressing the lack of security posts or barracks along the land borders, particularly in contrast to the Cameroonian side.
