In Awka, Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the February 25 general election, made a generous donation of N10 million during the foundation laying ceremony of the Department of Midwifery and Public Health Nursing at the Millennium College of Nursing Sciences, affiliated with the Awka Anglican Communion in Awka.
It’s worth noting that Mr. Obi had previously contributed N40 million to the Faith Specialist Hospital, which houses the College. His contributions are aimed at strengthening the healthcare facilities within the Diocese.
Mr. Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the project, stating that he would remain involved until its completion. His motivation for this gesture stems from his belief that healthcare is a critical developmental need for any society. He encouraged institutions like the Church to continue their efforts in developing these crucial areas.
He emphasized that his contributions benefit not only the bishop and priests but also the entire population of the state, pledging to utilize his connections to secure additional funding from his associates.
The Anglican Bishop of Awka and the Archbishop of Niger Province, Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Ibezim, commended Mr. Obi for consistently demonstrating his dedication to the welfare of the masses. He highlighted Mr. Obi’s previous accomplishments in Anambra State, such as returning schools to the Church and providing substantial financial support for education and healthcare.
He praised Mr. Obi as a “builder of both individuals and institutions,” citing his significant investments in education and healthcare, which have transformed these sectors within the state.
Additionally, Mr. Obi’s former Commissioner and Chief of Staff, Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna, commended the Church for its commitment to initiatives that enhance society. She recalled that during Mr. Obi’s tenure as Governor, his vision aligned with global development goals, resulting in a revitalized healthcare sector.
Under his leadership, Prof. Okunna noted that Chukwuemeka-Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital was constructed from the ground up, equipped, and accredited. His administration also built ten new maternity and child care facilities in remote areas of the state and procured nearly 100 ambulances for selected Anambra hospitals.
The Provost, Mrs. Chisom Ezulike, expressed her gratitude for Mr. Obi’s generous contributions and praised his accessibility, with him providing his contact information and encouraging discussions on the institution’s progress and any challenges they may face.
