In a significant announcement, Senator Saidu Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, revealed that the inauguration of the wagon freight train from Apapa Ports to Ibadan will facilitate the daily transportation of 90 container cargoes.
Senator Alkali made this revelation during the official launch of the wagon freight train haulage at the APM Terminal in Apapa, Lagos, on Tuesday.

He emphasized that this freight train will play a crucial role in alleviating port congestion and preventing shippers from incurring demurrage charges.
Senator Alkali explained that initially, the wagon will utilize one track, with the remaining two tracks scheduled for activation upon completion.
“The ministry will collaborate with the Minister of Finance and the Customs department regarding the removal of the scanning center, which is currently impeding the finalization of the remaining tracks leading to the ports,” Senator Alkali stated. “Once these two remaining tracks are laid, cargo will flow in and out of the ports efficiently.”
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Fidet Okhiria, disclosed that the wagon will transport 30 containerized cargo freights per trip from Lagos to Ibadan.
Mr. Okhiria highlighted that the Minister of Transportation has already inaugurated freight movements to Papalanto and Ibadan.
“While we have the capacity to conduct four trips daily, we are commencing operations with three trips, allowing for the transportation of 90 40ft containers daily from the ports,” Mr. Okhiria explained. “The current railway line in use is temporary, but we are making strides towards replacing it with the three designated lines for this terminal. Our aim is to prevent vandalism by ensuring that the tracks remain operational.”
He emphasized that frequent use of the tracks would help people recognize their value and importance while discouraging acts of vandalism.
Mr. Jetson Nwankwo, the Managing Director of Bueno Logistics, shared his commitment to optimizing railway usage to alleviate road congestion in Lagos.
“Our ongoing partnership with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and terminal operators is aimed at easing traffic congestion caused by container trucks in Lagos,” Mr. Nwankwo said. “The introduction of the new standard gauge line at the APM Terminal is a significant development, capable of transporting up to 60 containers in a single trip from Apapa complex. With daily operations, we can anticipate a reduction in container presence on bridges. The ultimate goal is to transport containers from Apapa Port complex to the expansive freight terminal in Moniya, Ibadan.”
