Grammy award-winning Nigerian artist, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, has expressed his contemplation about taking a hiatus from the music scene.
Burna Boy shared his thoughts on his Instagram story, revealing that he is considering a break from music due to a lucrative contract offer he recently received. He drew inspiration from the sabbatical taken by billionaire Barbadian-American singer Rihanna.

Burna Boy mentioned that the substantial contract he’s been presented with is a test of his passion for music. He stated, “The numbers I’m seeing on this contract are significant, and these upcoming years in my life will truly reveal my love for making music.”
In a previous statement, Burna Boy had suggested that he doesn’t feel adequately appreciated by Nigerians despite his significant contributions to the music industry and his pride in representing his country. He expressed his frustrations in his song “Thanks,” featuring J.Cole from his seventh studio album, ‘I Told Them.’
He criticized the lack of love in Nigeria and how people tend to focus on spreading rumors about him rather than acknowledging his musical achievements. Burna Boy addressed speculations surrounding an incident on June 8, 2022, where his police escorts allegedly fired shots at a club-goer, Steph Briella, her partner, and best friend at Cubana’s Club in Victoria Island, Lagos. These rumors claimed that Burna Boy was trying to steal a married woman from her husband.
Additionally, Burna Boy debunked rumors that his mother was one of the dancers of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, and clarified that he doesn’t have a baby mama like many of his colleagues. His lyrics in the song express his frustration at the lack of appreciation despite his efforts to make his people proud.
