Umaru Bago, the Governor of Niger State, has extended his condolences to the families affected by a tragic boat accident that resulted in multiple casualties in communities situated between Jebba and Kainji Dam within the Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, calling it both distressing and unfortunate.
“This is an utterly shocking and heartbreaking situation for the residents of the affected communities, and I share in their grief. I pray that Allah will grant the departed souls Aljannah Firdausi,” the statement conveyed.

Governor Bago, while consoling the bereaved families, instructed the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to employ all available resources to alleviate the suffering of the affected individuals.
Additionally, the governor offered prayers for the solace of the victims’ families and the swift recovery of those who sustained injuries. He also emphasized the significance of wearing life jackets when boarding boats and discouraged overcrowding to ensure safety.
The incident involved a boat carrying over 100 passengers, including women and children, traveling from neighboring communities to New Gbajibo Resettlement en route to Old Gbajibo, which tragically capsized. The victims, hailing from Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yankyade communities, were en route to engage in farming activities when the accident occurred on a Sunday morning. As of now, over 20 individuals have been confirmed as casualties, while more than 30 people have been rescued. A joint rescue effort involving marine police, local divers, and collaboration with the state emergency agency is currently underway.
