Ahmad Muhammad, the Chairman of the Katsina Football Academy, shared his motivation behind establishing the academy, drawing from his personal experience growing up in the UK after being affected by the Boko Haram crisis in Nigeria. He emphasized that football played a crucial role in preventing him from engaging in antisocial behavior and criminal activities.

Muhammad explained, “Yesterday, we introduced the academy and held a scouting tournament that spanned the past month across the three senatorial zones in Katsina. Sixteen teams from local governments had the opportunity to showcase their talent. We scouted players not only from within the state but also from Lagos. As the tournament continues, we are identifying the most promising talents. To date, we have selected 70 players.”

During an interview with sports writers in Katsina, former Super Eagles star Tijjani Babangida encouraged young players to seize this valuable opportunity, emphasizing that the program offers not just football training but also guidance on how to achieve success in life.

Austin Eguavoen, another former Super Eagles player and the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), hailed Governor Radda’s establishment of the Katsina Football Academy as a commendable initiative. He urged other governors and stakeholders to follow suit. Eguavoen advised young footballers to remain focused, disciplined, dedicated, and respectful of their culture while emphasizing the importance of education alongside their football pursuits.

Governor Radda expressed his gratitude to the former players and the You Versus You Football Team for their presence at the ceremony, expressing hope that they would discover talented Katsina youths worthy of national team trials.

CAF announced that the competition will kick off on Saturday, 19 June 2027, while the final is scheduled for Saturday, 17 July 2027.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the governing body confirmed that the calendar was approved by the FIFA Council during its recent meeting in Vancouver, Canada. However, the exact venues for both the opening match and the final will be revealed at a later date.

The 2027 edition will make history as the first AFCON to be hosted by three countries. CAF noted that the joint hosting arrangement is expected to extend the tournament’s reach to more than 400 million people across East Africa.

Focus now shifts to the qualification process, with CAF confirming that the preliminary round has already been completed. The official draw for the qualifiers is set to take place on 19 May 2026.

A total of 48 teams, including the three host nations, will compete for places at the tournament. The draw will determine the group-stage pathways to qualification.

CAF explained that the qualifiers will be played across three FIFA international windows: Matchdays 1 and 2 will run from 21 September to 6 October 2026, Matchdays 3 and 4 from 9 to 17 November 2026, and Matchdays 5 and 6 from 22 to 30 March 2027.

Teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group securing qualification for the finals.

The return of AFCON to East Africa carries significant historical importance, marking the first time the region will host the tournament since Ethiopia staged it in 1976.

CAF also stated that the 2027 edition aims to build on the success of recent tournaments in Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire, which recorded major improvements in commercial value, sponsorship deals, and global television audiences.

The 19-year-old shattered a national record that had stood for nearly 40 years, surpassing the previous 44.17 seconds set by Innocent Egbunike in 1987.

Ogazi’s remarkable run also marked a significant personal best, improving on his previous time of 44.41 seconds.

Although he finished second in the race by an incredibly slim margin of 0.005 seconds, his extraordinary time became the major talking point and now places him joint-top of the world rankings for the season.

The feat also elevated him to sixth place on Africa’s all-time 400m list, further cementing his status as one of the continent’s brightest sprint talents.

His performance additionally rewrote the University of Alabama record books and now stands as the sixth fastest time ever recorded in collegiate history.

With Ogazi’s breakthrough, Nigeria now boasts the world-leading times in both the men’s and women’s 400 metres this season, following Ella Onojuvwevwo’s impressive 49.59-second run earlier in the year.

Ogazi’s rise has been steadily building, having reached the 400m final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris before securing national titles in 2025 through both the NCAA and Southeastern Conference.

He has also excelled in relay events and sprint doubles, including a 200m victory earlier this season.

His latest record-breaking outing now signals that the long-anticipated sub-44-second barrier for a Nigerian male quarter-miler may soon become a reality.
