Maida emphasized the NYSC’s pivotal role in promoting national unity by instilling values such as community service, unity, and solidarity among all Nigerians, irrespective of cultural, ethnic, or social backgrounds.

He made these remarks during his address at the opening ceremony of the NYSC legal officers workshop in Abuja on Monday.

“Legal officers, whether in the public or private sector, are essential stakeholders in any organization, primarily responsible for managing its legal affairs,” he stated.

“A significant aspect of this responsibility involves ensuring organizational compliance with relevant laws, policies, and regulations. To fulfill this role effectively, legal teams must possess comprehensive knowledge of all relevant legal frameworks guiding the organization’s operations.”

Maida emphasized the necessity for training and capacity-building programs to facilitate a deep understanding of the laws and policies governing their organizations, along with guidance on interpreting and implementing pertinent regulations.

“It’s imperative that management adheres to legal advice provided by legal officers to safeguard the organization from potential penalties, lawsuits, and reputational harm,” he added.

Maida commended the NYSC for organizing the capacity-building program, which he believes will enhance the effectiveness of its legal officers and, consequently, the entire NYSC.

He highlighted the invaluable contributions of youth corps members to various sectors of the economy, including the communications industry, where they contribute to the Commission’s mandate.

“As acknowledged by the NYSC, the Commission plays a crucial role in safeguarding citizens’ data privacy by mandating its licensees to protect subscriber information as per regulatory provisions,” Maida stated.

“The Commission and its licensees are obligated to ensure the confidentiality of subscriber data, and compliance with statutory provisions is overseen by the Commission’s legal officers,” he concluded.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
