Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court issued an ex-parte order on Friday, May 24, restraining Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Emir Sanusi and halting the implementation of the law that abolished the four emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.
In response to this legal development, Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi as Emir, disputing the jurisdiction of the judge who issued the order from the United States. Meanwhile, Sanusi returned to the palace, while the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, settled into a mini-palace upon his arrival in the state. The governor subsequently ordered Bayero’s arrest, accusing him of attempting to disrupt the state’s peace.
Addressing a press briefing at the command headquarters on Saturday morning, Commissioner of Police Usaini Mohammed Gumel emphasized the police’s commitment to upholding the court order. He underscored that the police, along with other law enforcement agencies, are fully prepared to provide adequate security to everyone in compliance with their statutory duties as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.
Gumel urged the law-abiding people of Kano to remain calm, patient, and cooperative with security agencies. He highlighted that the matter will be addressed by the court on June 3, 2024. Furthermore, he warned against any attempts to disrupt the peace, stating that perpetrators would face the full force of the law. Gumel emphasized that the police are vigilant and prepared to handle any attempts to incite violence or launch attacks on individuals, property, or infrastructure in the state.
In conclusion, the Kano State Police Command emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and urged troublemakers to refrain from engaging in violent activities, as such actions would be met with decisive legal measures.
