BREAKING: President Tinubu Orders Comprehensive Review Of Appointments To Tertiary Institutions’ Governing Boards

President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of the recent appointments to the governing boards of tertiary institutions, citing inconsistencies in the process. The decision comes ahead of the planned inauguration and retreat for the nominees. The review is aimed at addressing the inconsistencies and ensuring that the process aligns with national expectations and constitutional principles.

This move follows threats from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on a strike due to alleged delays in constituting governing councils. In response, the Federal Ministry of Education had released a list of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The Ministry, under Mamman Tahir, was preparing for a retreat for the nominees and had set the inauguration date for May 31.

Public outcry and allegations that the nominations failed to adhere to the Federal Character principle, with some states receiving disproportionately fewer nominations, have prompted this latest directive from the Presidency. Some states reportedly received only one nomination, while others received multiple, raising concerns about equitable representation.

President Tinubu acknowledged the feedback from across the country and emphasized his commitment to ensuring strict compliance with the Federal Character principle, as enshrined in the Constitution. Onanuga reiterated this commitment, stating that the review will consider national spread and ensure that every part of the country is adequately represented.

“The review will also take into consideration national spread and ensure every part of the country is adequately represented,” said Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

This directive signifies the President’s responsiveness to public concerns and his dedication to fair and inclusive governance in the administration of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. Further details on the outcomes of the review process are awaited.
