The Tragic Story of the Echefu Siblings
Jonathan Echefu, 32, is a graduate who recently visited his mother in Abia State after a long time. His journey from Lagos seemed lengthy, but the warm welcome from his 65-year-old mother made it worthwhile. Jonathan’s life, however, has been a series of challenges, especially since he and three of his siblings lost their sight mysteriously while in secondary school……..CONTINUE READING
The Onset of Blindness
Jonathan recalls the day he noticed something was wrong with his vision. He woke up to find his sight fading to white, a situation that left him disoriented and fearful. Despite numerous visits to hospitals, no clear cause was identified. His blindness led to significant life changes, impacting his education and social interactions.
Education Amidst Hardship
Despite his condition, Jonathan was determined to pursue his education. He faced numerous rejections before finally gaining admission to the University of Calabar, where he studied Political Science. Navigating university life was difficult, with Jonathan relying on the kindness of fellow students to help him get to classes and lectures. Many were unsupportive, questioning his presence in the academic environment.
Siblings with Similar Fates
Jonathan’s story is shared by three of his siblings: Ruth, Samson, and Anderson. Each of them experienced a similar sudden onset of blindness during their secondary school years. Medical examinations failed to provide a clear diagnosis, leaving the family in despair. Jonathan’s other two siblings also have visual impairments, though they are not completely blind.
Samson’s Experience
Samson, 34, lost his sight partially at seven and completely at the age of 14. He described the painful process of adjusting to blindness, which included learning braille and struggling to complete his education. Despite these challenges, Samson graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a degree in Social Works. However, like his siblings, he remains unemployed, adding to the family’s struggles.
The Mother’s Plight
Their mother, Virginia Echefu, believes the blindness afflicting her children is a result of a spiritual attack. After losing her husband, she has had to fend for her children alone, trading crayfish to make ends meet. Her grief and determination are evident as she continues to hope for a better future for her children.
Medical Perspective
Dr. Anthony Okpobrisi, a chief consultant ophthalmologist, suggests that the siblings’ condition may be hereditary. He emphasizes the importance of early medical intervention and regular eye checkups to prevent such conditions. He also notes that while some causes of blindness are treatable, advanced cases, like those possibly affecting the Echefus, might not be reversible.
Advocacy for the Disabled
Tolulope Aluko, President of the Association of Technology Inclined Visually Impaired Persons of Nigeria, stresses the need for societal integration and support for persons with disabilities. He calls for better funding and effective implementation of policies by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).
Government’s Response
The NCPWD highlights its efforts to address unemployment among persons with disabilities. Initiatives include providing entrepreneurial support and establishing skills acquisition centers. These measures aim to empower individuals with disabilities, helping them to become self-reliant and integrated into society.
Conclusion
The story of the Echefu siblings underscores the multifaceted challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Nigeria. Their resilience and determination, despite their condition, highlight the urgent need for comprehensive support systems to ensure they lead fulfilling lives.

DIPLOMATIC SLAP: ADC Blasts Macron For “Abandoning” Tinubu In France In Epic UNGA Outburst!
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the simultaneous absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from Nigeria, calling it a dangerous violation of the Nigerian Constitution. In a statement issued on Tuesday by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party challenged the legality of the President’s prolonged stay abroad.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Constitutional Violation: Under Section 145 of the Constitution, a president going on vacation for up to 21 days must formally transmit a written declaration to the National Assembly leadership, allowing the Vice-President to act. The ADC noted that President Tinubu has exceeded this 21-day limit since departing on August 30 without transferring power.
-
Rejection of Proxies: The party dismissed the Presidency’s defense that Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume could represent the President, stating that SGF status does not confer presidential or constitutional authority.
-
No “Working Vacation”: The ADC rejected the notion of a “working vacation,” arguing that Nigeria is a constitutional democracy rather than a private enterprise managed remotely via phone calls and press statements.
-
The Paris-UNGA Irony: The party slammed it as a “national disgrace” that French President Emmanuel Macron left France to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, while President Tinubu remained behind vacationing in Paris.
“President Tinubu cannot be vacationing in Paris while President Macron is in New York representing France and expect Nigerians to accept that it is okay for their President to continue to hang around in a country after the host has left to attend to more important things,” the party stated.
The ADC has formally challenged the Presidency and the National Assembly to clarify who is currently exercising executive powers and under what constitutional provision.
